What technical basis is there for your extreme confidence that the Zeiss lens itself cannot do 8 Megapixel video? I think the issue is the AX33 lens Zeiss or no Zeiss. Personally, I would rather buy the Ax33 if it had a prime lens rather than a zoom lens, but they never make camcorders like that. My point here is that Sony could put optics on a camcorder even if the zoom range and resolution were well beyond the AX 33’s, and still achieve excellent performance and very low cost.

The still resolution is artificial. It’s too bad because sony could have easily beaten Gopro if they wouldn’t have gotten so ridiculous with the wide angle.
I begged to differ with your conclusion, stating the possibility that there were other explanations. Thanks for the answer about the purple coating. Now, I admit still being confused what the actual pixel count on the sensor is given the low “effective” pixel counts even for photos.

The frame grab was done in my video editor and is the same The stabilization is light years ahead of any other gimbal device you can get for videography as it is intelligent enough to know when a movement is due to hand shake and not purposely moving. It is also true that the AX is unusable in terms of shakiness at the long end without active stabilization turned on. The CA on that lens was the worst I had ever seen in a video camera, and its full HD resolution was horrible.
I think that the glass is better on the Ax though, lending it to produce cleaner images. I have taken time to compile a souund that shows the difference in video quality between active stabilization vs standard stabilization.

Qopen do not mean to say that the AX33 video is bad or unacceptable. A heavier lens could slow the responsiveness of the BOSS system. I believe that equipping the AX33 with more than adequate optics is neither expensive nor particularly difficult to do given other examples of their super zoom cameras with 24 megapixel frames versus only 8 megapixels for producing 4K video. The Ax has a larger sensor allowing zound to use a crop without affecting image quality.
